Olive oil has been used for thousands of years as a beauty aid, with Cleopatra and other noble women in Ancient Egypt said to bath in olive oil to keep their skin smooth. It is the rich emollients present in olive oil that moisturises the skin naturally, and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) has the added advantage of containing antioxidants like vitamin A and E which are renowned for their ability to help repair and renew damaged skin.
When using EVOO it’s important to remember that it will take a little longer to absorb than packaged moisturisers and is best applied to damp skin.
1.Gentle Eye Moisturiser
Carefully dab a little EVOO around your eyes to nourish the skin and reduce puffiness and fine lines.
This DIY scrub only needs 2 ingredients – EVOO and sugar. In a small bowl combine EVOO with sugar, or you could also use a coarse salt, and then gently rub on face, hands and body to remove dry skin before showering.
3.Nourishing Face Mask
The addition of egg helps to firm the skin, while raw honey has natural antibacterial properties that can help fight acne. Combine 1 teaspoon of EVOO, 1 egg yolk, 1 tablespoon of raw honey and a few drops of lemon juice in a bowl. Apply mixture to face, massaging for 5-10 minutes before rinsing off.
4.Conditioning Hair Treatment
Revive tired ends and give your hair a glossy, shiny finish by massaging approx. 1 tablespoon of EVOO onto freshly shampooed and towel-dried hair. Put on a shower cap to help lock in the moisture and wait an hour for the hair to absorb the oil before rinsing out.
Get silky smooth skin by adding around a few tablespoons of EVOO to your bath once it’s filled. This is also fantastic for kids and babies with dry skin. Place a few drops of EVOO into their bath water, ensuring no oil gets into their eyes.
Safely remove your makeup while moisturising your skin at the same time. Dab a cotton ball or pad into 1 tablespoon of EVOO and gently wipe over skin.
Combine a few drops of EVOO and water into a bowl and soak your hands for 5 minutes. Pat dry, then warm a few teaspoons of oil in a bowl and gently rub it into your cuticles.
